I searched the internet to find a quote that I felt embodied how I understand and experience family. I found this quote from the former first lady Barbara Bush to be simple, yet very profound.
"To us, family means putting your arms around each other and being there."
There was also another quote that I really liked from actor Michael J. Fox, "Family is not an important thing. It is everything." Another really profound statement. This is how I was raised and it is certainly how I continue to believe that a family should function. I know for a fact that parents in particular are really drawn to a statement like this. For many people their family is their life. Friends sometimes come and go through the years, but family is always there. From the time your an infant, to your years as a youngster and then finally to your adult years your family will always be your family. All of this to say that family is something to be celebrated and that is one of the reasons why I absolutely love photographing families. The image below is to me an image that passes the test of time and displays what its like to have a family. Its everything. Family starts with two and then it grows from there. Throughout the years the only thing that changes is the number of people welcomed into the group and their ages. A family unit never stops caring for each other or as barbara bush puts it, "putting their arms around each other and being there." I have experienced first hand what it feels like to a parent to see their family start with two and expand to include other members. This is something special and it should be. To be able to captured even the smallest semblance means alot to me and I feel blessed to participate in that. Thanks to the Smucker family for helping me create this beautiful image.
